The Stoic Quotes Behind Memento Jar

Open Memento Jar on any given day and, above the jar, you'll find a short quote — from Marcus Aurelius, Seneca, or Epictetus most often, but also from mindfulness teachers and a handful of more modern voices on focus and persistence.

Why a quote, and why Stoicism specifically

Journaling apps often start you with a blank box and a blinking cursor, which is exactly the moment a lot of people close the app instead of writing. A quote does something small but useful: it gives you one thought to react to before you write your own.

We leaned on Stoic philosophy for the first quote pack because it lines up with what journaling is actually good for — noticing your reaction to something, instead of just the something. Marcus Aurelius wrote, "You have power over your mind - not outside events. Realize this, and you will find strength." That's close to the whole exercise of tagging a memory with a mood: the day happened, but how you carry it is still yours to decide.

The three quote packs

  • Stoic Philosophy — Marcus Aurelius, Seneca, Epictetus, and others, on perspective and self-control.
  • Mindfulness & Gratitude — shorter, present-moment focused quotes from teachers like Thich Nhat Hanh and modern writers on gratitude.
  • Motivation & Focus — quotes about persistence and getting started, for the days the jar needs a nudge more than a reflection.

You can turn any pack on or off, or turn quotes off entirely, in Settings. You can also add your own quotes — a line from a book, something a friend said, anything worth seeing again on a random morning.

The point isn't the quote

The quote is just a doorway. The actual habit is what happens after you read it — a memory, a mood, a photo, dropped into the jar. Some mornings the quote lands and some mornings it doesn't, and that's fine. It's there so the blank page isn't the first thing you see.
